Chief Fire Horse
Chief joined Safe Harbor in the spring of 2026.
Owned for years by a senior citizen forced to go into hospice care in another state, Chief had not been caught nor handled for some time - perhaps months. He had a feeding routine and knew what cookies were, so armed with that information and the knowledge that other groups had declined the challenge, the Safe Harbor team set out with truck, trailer, catch pen and food.
It took less time than we expected - and once caught and haltered, he loaded right up, bonding with the human who we decided on the spot would become his foster in place of our previous plans. With the space and time to allow him to adjust, Chief has thrived.
He’s had vetting, farrier visit, deworming, and daily catch and handle sessions. He shows some signs of vision loss, and is still a challenge to catch depending on his mood. He’s the tiny tornado in the field, keeping a big warmblood company.
Best guess is he’s around 25 years old and is gaited - perhaps a Paso or Rocky mixed with pony.
If you’d like to become a weekly, monthly, or one-time sponsor of Chief’s regular care costs (feed, hay, farrier, deworming, annual vetting), we’d love to have you join our Safe Harbor family.
