<image:title>Adoptable Horses - Lettucerockthem A</image:title>
<image:caption>Lettie is a big-bodied 16.1 hand, million dollar winning gelding whose been off the track since 2022. Born is Australia, he successfully raced on 2 continents before retiring in 2022. This horse has been loved his entire life and is pure class. Lettie trots under saddle and we’ve been focusing on refreshing the work done before us, working on flexing, bending, working over ground poles, yielding to leg, and laying the foundation for solid trot and eventual canter work. Lettie has been to a schooling show, ridden out on trails and in the outdoor arena. He is curious, wants to work, and wants to please. He’s friendly, in your pocket, easy to catch and easy for all the things typical of a horse that’s been there, done that. He stands tied/cross tied, easy to groom, easy to handle his feet, easy to tack up. He can be a bit reactive to loud/overbearing personalities and he is much more comfortable with ‘horse people’ who work with him with clear expectations. He’s looking for an intermediate or better handler/rider to continue getting him back in shape. We could see him being a solid dressage mount for someone who also enjoys hacking around. He could be ridden western as well, we’re simply riding in the tack that fits him. Lettie is UTD on all care (Coggins, vaccinations, farrier, deworming), and had a recent chiro check (9/2025). He is used to the ‘finer things’ - stall in bad weather and blanket in the winter. He’s an easy keeper on decent pasture and currently eats Tribute Kalm N EZ plus pasture. He does okay pastured with another gelding or in a small herd, although he does have a history of being quite dominant over a senior horse. We do NOT recommending him in a larger herd. *He currently lives with an OTTB gelding his age and size, a mini horse and a mini donkey - and he LOVES the littles. We will be particular about where he goes next as he deserves the best home as his ‘retirement’ job. Please review our adoption FAQ and complete an application if interested in meeting him. Adoption fee: $2000</image:caption>

<image:title>Adoptable Horses - Buttercup</image:title>
<image:caption>Buttercup is an 18 year old (estimated), 14.2-ish hand grade mare, likely a Paso cross as she does show a Paso-type gait and has many of the personality traits those who love the breed would recognize. Buttercup is fairly straightforward to handle, and she looks for quiet confidence in her handler. Her best match is someone willing to listen and meet her where she is. Buttercup has some special considerations important for a prospective adopter to understand: 1) She was a pet for her first 8 years, started under saddle with somewhere between 30-60 rides, and adopted in succession to two homes that were inappropriate for a very green older horse, neither of whom understood that additional training and lessons would likely have solved their confidence issues. Instead, she was then adopted to a “companion home” where she stood in a field for 7 years with minimal interaction, fast forwarding to now where we will ensure her next match is the right match. 2) She very likely would have been a candidate for a spay as a young mare. She comes into heat just from being pastured next to a gelding or from a change in her environment, and she is more sensitive/reactive while in heat. As a teenage mare, Regumate, Depo, or marbling would be options someone could explore. This is also why we recommend a MARE ONLY environment. 3) Paso experience is strongly recommended. She is sensitive, "flight" minded, and has absolutely no use for someone who trains with force, "flooding" or hard hands - and remembers the person in her past who did. 4) She is a horse that needs daily or close to daily handling. You can't turn her out in a field for 4 days and expect to walk right up and catch her on the 5th. This is due to the years she simply wasn't -get her in a routine, and this will likely get better as it has in her current foster home. She has been assessed by a professional with the following: If someone had a couple months to invest in her, she'd likely come around and be fine to ride again. As a small organization, we simply do not have $2-3,000 to invest with the expectation we miraculously find someone who will take her on from there and continue her training/riding, and so we are offering Buttercup with two options: 1) Foster to adopt: Adopter is either a qualified "training level" rider to continue her training, or is an advanced-level rider who will place Buttercup in training with an APPROVED, qualified professional for 60 days of training (to include lessons with the adopter); at the end of 60 days, adoption becomes official or can decline to move forward. 2) Sanctuary foster: Buttercup can go as a companion mare to a sanctuary foster home with an appropriate set-up in consideration of her needs outlined above. Safe Harbor retains ownership and will cover the costs of her annual vetting as well as end-of-life if/when needed. Sanctuary foster farms are required to file monthly check-ins with photos, and are located within the radius of one of our regular veterinarians. This is an excellent option for someone who wants a companion horse but may not want to "buy" another, or who wants a built-in support system. Buttercup stands to be groomed, lowers her head to be haltered and seems to enjoy attention. She is excellent for the farrier. She has typical Paso rock hard, beautiful feet. She is up to date on all routine care (vaccinations, Coggins, deworming, farrier care), and is a fairly easy keeper on 1 scoop of Purina senior AM & PM and appropriate amount of hay for her body size and type. If you are interested in becoming Buttercup's person as outlined in one of the options above, please complete an application. We deeply appreciate Chasing the Son Farm and Yvonne Lucius, APF-i for assistance with Buttercup’s monthly care costs.</image:caption>

<image:title>Pyrite Lady - Pyrite Lady (“Bonny”)</image:title>
<image:caption>Pyrite Lady, known by friends and family as Bonny, retired from racing and became a broodmare for several years. Once she reached a point where a more leisurely life was her best option, she came to Safe Harbor for retraining. Bonny spent several years at Safe Harbor as a walk-trot lesson horse, camp horse and trail horse with our former executive director. Those who have attended our events likely saw her giving pony rides to kids or as one of our featured retired racehorses. She went on loan to LMU Vet School for a year to teach future veterinarians the basics of handling, bandaging, radiographs and other fun skills. Now Bonny has returned to Safe Harbor, where she will remain in our sanctuary program for as long as she is comfortable. Bonny requires aluminum natural balance shoes every 5 weeks, at a cost of $90 per shoeing, to maintain a level of soundness. She enjoys twice-daily meals of Purina Impact 14% and soaked alfalfa pellets, plus 24/7 access to beautiful pasture, a fly mask in the summer months and a blanket in the winter. Bonny’s care is partially sponsored by her former owner. You can join as a sponsor for as little as $5 per month, here. Bonny’s Amazon Wish List</image:caption>

<image:title>Kix - Kix</image:title>
<image:caption>Kix is an AQHA registered gelding who had one owner his entire life. When his owner was diagnosed with a terminal illness, his family reached out and asked for help. Kix was trained as a young horse, but had been an 1100 pound pet for the last decade, giving young kids lead-around rides but not being ridden independently. We adopted him to a therapy program in August, 2020, but while he made an ideal horse for interactions with patients, he failed to thrive in a herd of geldings in his new home. He also developed some lameness in his right front which was diagnosed as laminitis. He was treated for the laminitis and came back to Safe Harbor as his adopters wanted the best for him and they were worried at his apparent depression. Because he is now in his 20s and doesn’t retain much under-saddle (yes, we did some preliminary training but the “go” cue doesn’t stick with him - he’d much rather be a pet), plus his special needs for his metabolism, Kix will remain as a sanctuary resident. He is currently the companion to his foster’s mare and doing well. Kix would love a sponsor or 2 to help cover his monthly care (hay, ration balancer and farrier).</image:caption>

<image:title>Charlie's Fund - If you are in need of assistance with castration, euthanasia, or other veterinary-related expenses, please complete an application.</image:title>
<image:caption>Charlie’s Fund is an owner-assistance program for horse owners in middle Tennessee and southern Kentucky. Since 2022, we have assisted more than 30 horses and their owners through Charlie’s Fund grants. For years, Safe Harbor quietly provided financial assistance related to veterinary bills, vaccinations, castrations and humane euthanasia when privately contacted about a horse or owner in need. Charlie’s Fund is the official iteration of this assistance we have provided for years. In 2025, primary funding for Charlie’s Fund is due to the generous legacy of Hickory Hill Farm Rescue, which closed its doors at the end of 2024. An examination by a veterinarian will be performed prior to any request for euthanasia, and an ethical decision will be made at that time. Grant money is paid directly to the veterinarian for services rendered. Safe Harbor Sanctuary acts as the facilitator as a community service and makes absolutely no money providing these services. If you are in need of assistance with castration, euthanasia, or other veterinary-related expenses, please complete an application. We appreciate any gift of any amount, but are most grateful for sustaining donors who are able to give on a weekly, monthly or quarterly basis to ensure this much-needed program can continue beyond our initial funding.</image:caption>

<image:title>Tech Fall - Tech Fall (“Duke”)</image:title>
<image:caption>"Duke" is a 15 year old off the track thoroughbred by Birdstone who won a respectable $141,150 in his racing career. He had at least one post-track career that we know of, followed by adoption to a family who loved him. Unfortunately, he suffered an injury last year, and in the course of rehabilitating that injury, some additional tendon damage was found which may be degenerative. His family wanted to find him a safe landing, without concern that he would be ridden and re-injured or simply thrown away at an auction. Duke joins our sanctuary program which will allow him to receive care and love as a pasture buddy until he is no longer comfortable, which we hope is many years from now. (If he is determined to come sound in the future, this designation will be revisited.) Duke is an easy keeper on good pasture and he doesn’t need any special maintenance at this time. The majority of his care is sponsored.</image:caption>

<image:title>Max - Max</image:title>
<image:caption>Max joined Safe Harbor in August, 2022. He is estimated to be somewhere between 40-42 years old, based on his original rescuer’s research. If horses could talk, he would have enough stories to fill a book! He taught children to ride, enjoyed adventures on trails, and gave people lots of memories. Max spent the last 15 years enjoying retirement, but when his owner retired and the farm he’d been living on had sold, she reached out for help. Max has joined our sanctuary herd so that he can continue to enjoy a safe retirement. He is the companion to another gelding on his foster’s small farm. Max cannot chew hay, so his diet consists of soaked hay pellets and senior feed. He does enjoy gumming on grass, even though he can no longer chew it. He sees the farrier regularly and is on prescription medication for some arthritis - which is to be expected at his age! Max’s care is partially covered by a generous sponsorship from his previous owner. Additional sponsors for this special old man are appreciated. Max’s Amazon Wish List</image:caption>

<image:title>Maximus - sanctuary - Maximus (Max II)</image:title>
<image:caption>Maximus joined Safe Harbor in the summer of 2025. He lived most of his life on a local ranch, and was said to be well known by the ranching community at one point. When his two equally elderly companions were euthanized due to chronic laminitis, Max needed a safe, soft landing to live out his life. Aged in his mid-20’s, Max has numerous, complex health issues which we are working through from ‘worst’ to ‘least concerning.’ First and foremost, he has Cushings, which makes him more prone to seasonal laminitis. After some hoof soreness, he is now in special shoes and living a life of no grass pastures. He’s also on medication for Cushings (which addresses the symptoms but is not a ‘cure’.) He has gray horse melanoma (not especially uncommon or concerning unless it interferes with bodily functions or goes internal), has a mild heart murmur which may or may not disappear with good nutrition, and shows mild liver disfunction on bloodwork. Needless to say, we are working toward a life of pasture soundness. He currently seems comfortable and has become much more content with daily handling. Max’s extensive care costs are partially covered by his foster family. Additional sponsors for this hard luck old man are appreciated.</image:caption>
